Thirsk is an old fashioned market town which has a traditional feel about it with a cobbled market square and town clock where market days are still regularly held on a Saturday and Monday. It is famous for its race course, 15th Century Church and Thomas Lord. Thirsk is also the Darrowby of the late James Herriot (Alf Wight), famous vet and author.
Thirsk and Sowerby are set in the centre of "Herriot Country" Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the west and the North York Moors National Park to the east.
Thirsk, having ready access to the A19 and A1, makes an ideal centre for touring North Yorkshire. Thirsk is about 320km north of London, 230km south of Edinburgh and 35km north west of York.
